The 12 miles of beaches on Hilton Head Island are considered its most beautiful natural resource. At low tide, the beach extends to a width of 600 feet. Tide levels change as much as eight feet about every six hours. All of Hilton Head's beautiful beaches are public, form the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private. if your accommodations do not provide direct access to the beach, you can usually find public access nearby. The Town of Hilton Head provides four public beach accesses: Alder Lane Beach Access off South Forest Beach Drive; Coligny Beach Circle; both on the South end of the island and Driessen Beach Park at the end of Bradley Beach Road; and Folly Field Beach Park off Folly Field Road, both mid-island.

umbrella (33K)Signs are posted on the beach listing the rules and regulations enforced for the safety of everyone at the beach. If you have a question concerning beach prohibitions or regulations, please contact the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department.

In addition to walking, swimming or biking the beaches, there are many other water activities available. Check into the boat cruises or sailing charters. Watch Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin at play while you learn about the environment on an EcoTour. Try a kayak lesson and tour or get into some action water sports via a powerboat. You can also spend the day aboard a fishing or shrimping charter. If you love the water, you'll love Hilton Head!

Hilton Head is one of the top tennis destinations in the world. With more than 145 public courts and some 20 tennis clubs, there are facilities suited for every caliber of player. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, the level of quality instruction offered on the island compares to none other.

sailboat (38K)Springfest begins in March with a month-long celebration, including the infamous Hilton Head St. Patrick's Day Parade. One of the largest outdoor wine festivals in the Southeast, Winefest, is held on the last Saturday of March.

And April is the month for attending premier sporting events on the island. International television coverage of two professional sports tournaments is broadcast live from Hilton Head. The coverage begins with the Family Circle Magazine Cup, a highlight on the Women's Professional Tennis Tour.

Several weeks later is the MCI Classic - The Heritage of Golf, which celebrated its 30th year in 1998. The Tournament is alwasy a popular stop for many of the high-ranking players on the Men's Professional Golf Tour.

Cool Breeze Kayaking offers a variety of kayaking trips, including dolphin watching and sunset tours, to provide those memorable family experiences to complete your vacation.

For another type of memorable experience, join Captain Jim aboard the Crabber J and learn to crab. You get to take home what you catch!

horses (42K)To maintain your fitness level while on the island, there are plenty of health clubs on the island. They offer a full schedule of step, aerobics, and spin classes and have a complete selection of exercise equipment.

And to see the island up close, rent bikes for the family from Palmetto Bikes and pedal along the miles of bicycle paths or along the beach. Treat yourself to a massage during your stay. You can go to them or they will come to you. You could get used to it!
